After an exciting boat ride
to the island where I got to see the flying fish, I received a warm welcome by
the hotel staff who congratulated us for the honeymoon even though I had made
it clear from the start that we were not married. I couldn’t wait to enter the
room and admire the clear view of the Indian Ocean from the window.
Since it was getting dark
and we were hungry, we decided to go outside and check what the island had to
offer in terms of local cuisine. Few meters away was another hotel that we
initially wanted to book. It had a lovely set up of dinner tables on the beach.
Around the table, they placed four candles in square shaped. It was beautiful
to watch the sunset from there as the ocean waves gently touched your feet while
having a romantic dinner.
Without thinking twice, I instantly
said, “That’s beautiful! Let’s have dinner there!” He liked the idea. It was
hard to tell if he was happy. I didn’t want to bother with too many questions since
I was almost dragged to come here, so I just wanted to have a good holiday. On
another table, a bit farther down the beach, there was another couple taking
romantic pictures and being all cuddly that almost made me sick. Not because
they seemed happy, but probably the way I felt about my relation and how I was
with a person who would not enjoy cuddling at all.
However, soon, happiness
took over me as I sat down absorbing the ambiance and started browsing through
the menu. A lovely waiter came to take our order and I told him how excited I was
about the set up and that I would like to have calamari fritted for starter.
While patiently waiting and talking
about the exciting trip, we saw a crab. I was a bit skeptical to touch the crab
but after convincing myself a bit, I took it in my hands. With all the
excitement, I didn’t even notice when the waiter came and placed the calamari
on the table. I gently kept the crab on the seashore and went back to my table
so I can greedily gulp down the starter. I was thinking to myself that I never
used to love food or was a foodie five years ago, but suddenly the passion for
food had kicked in.
While enjoying the food, I felt
something tickle my feet. For a second I thought it was him finally opening up
to romance or the scallops that the waves were gently bringing to the seashore.
I decided to look down with a smile and when my eyes saw what was under the
table and all around us on the beach, I nearly fainted. There were hundreds of
crabs all around us like an army popping out of nowhere from the sand. It felt
as if my eyes came out of the sockets and I started screaming. I almost jumped
on top of the table. I wanted to stand on the chair but it wouldn’t hold me
because we were on the wet sand and it was out of balance.
My reaction finally made him
laugh even though it was at the cost of a heart attack. Scared to death of my
sharp scream, the waiter looked down to see what was happening and he started
to laugh. He helped us move and seated us on the terrace in front of the hotel.
I was on my toes jumping around from one place to another trying to find an
empty space where I could place my feet while walking towards the new table. I
was frightened to see hundreds of crabs running towards me, even though all
they wanted was to go into the water. After that petrifying experience, I began
smiling to myself, glad that the evening continued in laughter.
